Carnegie Hall Announces 2006-2007 Season Concerts

Carnegie Hall, the famed New York city performance venue known primarily for presenting classical music concerts, also puts on several world and folk music concerts each year. Carnegie Hall has announced its 2006-2007 season concerts, and the lineup is impressive. Two separate series feature world music: Around The Globe and World Views.
This year's Around The Globe series will feature South African Choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo on Oct. 17, 2006, African-American a capella folk group Sweet Honey in the Rock on Nov. 10, 2006, Spanish guitar master Paco de Lucia on Feb. 10, 2007, Brazilian singer-songwriter (and 2006 Grammy Award Winner for Best Contemporary World Music Album) Gilberto Gil on March 20, 2007 and Portuguese fado diva Dulce Pontes on May 10, 2007. All of the "Around The Globe" performances will take place in Carnegie Hall's Isaac Stern Auditorium.
The World Views series will present five diverse concerts as well. On Oct. 14, 2006, "The Spirit of Fes" will feature Susan Hellauer, Aruna Sairam, Curro Piņana and more performing sacred music from Judaic, Christian, Muslim and Hindu traditions. On Nov. 4, Roswell Rudd and the Mongolian Buryat Band will combine Mongolian traditional music (including throat singing) with Jazz. Traditional Italian band Aramirč will perform on Jan. 19, 2007, South African urban Zulu folk singer Shiyani Ngcobo will perform on Feb. 9, 2007 and traditional Persian group Hossein Alizadeh & The Hamavayan Ensemble will perform on March 31, 2007. All of the "World Views" performances will take place in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall.
