Klezmer Music 101

Sunday July 16, 2006
One of my very favorite things about klezmer music is that, unlike many genres of world music, it is primarily used for happy occasions. Some of the lyrical content of klezmer is sad or ironic, but in general, it's happy music, played at weddings, bar mitzvahs and the like. Despite the near-eradication of Ashkenazi Jewish culture during the Holocaust, klezmer music still thrives to this day. Learn more about the powerful and fun genre that is klezmer music!

Thanks for this excellent primer. After reading it, and listening to some klezmer music online, I realized that I have heard the instrument, liked it, and wondered what the heck it was. Thanks for providing the answer!
