CD Review: Mariza - Concerto Em Lisboa

Thursday March 29, 2007
I admit that I'm somewhat new to Fado... I had been vaguely familiar with Amalia Rodrigues, but it was only recently that I really delved into the genre, and I can't believe I waited so long. Fado is passionate, intense, bluesy, sad, joyful and so very accessible. I've added "Go to Lisbon and hunt down the best fado houses in the city and sit there for a few months" to my list of things to do before I die, but since that's probably not going to happen anytime soon, I have to satisfy myself with recorded music. Thus, I was absolutely thrilled to discover fadista Mariza's latest CD, Concerto Em Lisboa, and even more thrilled to discover that the amazing album is accompanied by an hour-long DVD documentary on the history of fado. Both the CD and the DVD are intensely wonderful, and have led me even further into the discovery of the genre. Recommended? Uh... yeah. Big time.

I first started hearing Fado singers on World Routes and while some of the songs were nice, I have to say it didn’t really hit me until I heard Mariza. She has one of most astonishing voices I’ve ever heard and I’m not that young so I’ve heard a lot of voices. Unfortunately I haven’t really heard anyone else even close to as good since.

This is by far the best Fado I have heard. Mariza is an intensely sensitive performer.
