Whether you're a night owl, like me, or just an obsessive fan of fado, also like me, you'll want to make sure to catch fadista Mariza on the Late Show with David Letterman tonight (Thursday, 10/11). Mariza is the reigning queen of fado, and I recently reviewed her live CD, Concerto Em Lisboa.

Mariza is also on tour in the US right now, making stops in New York, Houston, Los Angeles and several places in between. See her full tour schedule for more details.

Incredible command of the stage and unbelievable phrasing and emotional longing in her voice. You could tell she blew Dave and the studio audience away…not to mention myself! Magical!

I was sitting at my apartment by myself just watching some late night TV as usual and Dave announced his musical guest so I set my remote down and watched. I have never been that blown away by a performance as such before in my life. I was by myself and when she finished I still applauded for it(I know she couldn’t hear me, but I didn’t care, it deserved applause). The camera man didn’t show the audience but if that wasn’t a standing ovation there’s something wrong with them. That performance was SPECTACULAR, and now I’m telling everyone about Mariza, and I want that CD really bad.

I had a very similar experience as Brian Geary above. I watched it more times than I care to admit.

Amazing. Must see her in Berkeley or Davis this month.

Amazing, wasn’t it? So few performers are really able to “dazzle” on late-night TV – generally, those performances are subpar… NOT IN THIS CASE!!! Wow. Really great – seriously, do NOT miss her if you can possibly get to one of her shows.

I’ve been following Mariza since I lived in Portugal in the 1990s and have seen her grow from a perfomer in small local bars to great concert halls.

Here she is singing the same song in front of 25,000 people at an open air concert in Lisbon last year (available on DVD).

This Lady is the greatest Fado singer in nowadays.
Personally I think she’s the best Fado performer so far.
Never the less, if you enjoy the music, there are other singers that you should listen (just youtube these names):
- Carlos do Carmo;
- Amália Rodrigues;
- Alfredo Marceneiro;
- Mafalda Arnauth;
- Camané.

And if you really enjoy it, there is only one thing to do:
Catch a plain to Lisbon and dine at a “Casa de Fados”.
