2008 Folk Alliance Wrap-Up

Tuesday February 26, 2008
For those of you who aren't familiar with the Folk Alliance conference, it's an annual event for musicians and music industry people to get together and talk about folk music, showcase folk music, and otherwise live and breathe folk music for a few days straight. Historically, Folk Alliance has covered all manner of folk music - ethnic and world traditional music being a major component, but in recent years, the conference has shifted more towards singer-songwriters, Americana and bluegrass/old-time, with world music being only ancillary (world music folks tend to meet up at the Association of Performing Arts Presenters conference and WOMEX instead). It's all good, though - there's still tons and tons of great music, from traditional to contemporary, as well as major industry chatter happening at Folk Alliance, and if you're in the business, it's a worthwhile event to attend, if for no other reason than the fact that the late-night jams there are killer! About.com's guide to Folk Music, Kim Ruehl, was lucky enough to attend this year, and discovered some excellent new music from both new and established artists.
