Around the World Music Blogosphere
Monday March 17, 2008
And now, for a quick round-up of news from some excellent world music blogs:
DubMC does a Q&A with Robert Singerman, an appropriately-named fellow who has done a lot of work in the area of lyric translation. Singerman "believes that breaking down language barriers - whether in audio, video, or live performance -- can give this music an advantage in reaching new audiences." I tend to agree with him. Though generally, the sentiment of music comes through, even if the lyrics aren't in a familiar language, there's a lot to be gained by understanding what the musicians are actually saying. Lyrics are poetry, after all, and though poetry is always best in its original language, it's still valuable to understand what those words mean.
Calcopyrite Communications offers us a review of an Angelique Kidjo concert, which was apparently quite stunning. I'm looking forward to catching Angelique Kidjo live myself on April 3 at the State Theatre in Ithaca, NY. I really can't wait!
Spinner's Around the World catches up with the wild and wonderful uillean piper Paddy Maloney, from the legendary Irish band The Chieftains.
Soundroots hilariously compares the attempts at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in winning the ears of America through ethnic music. Who wins? You'll have to listen to find out - MP3s are available!
