"Au Clair de la Lune" is an old French folk song that's been making quite a comeback in the last few days. Unless you haven't been reading any major news media recently, you've probably heard that the earliest known sound recording was found and decoded - and it's a song! Better yet, a folk song! It dates from 1860, and the 'recording' was originally intended just to be viewed, to analyze the sound waves, but modern audio historians have been able to resurrect it.

My earliest memory of "Au Clair de la Lune" dates all the way back to third grade, when we learned how to play it on the recorder. The one from 1860 sounds a little different - have a listen for yourself. I personally find the voice rather spooky and ghostly, though not nearly as terrifying as the sound of a roomful of third graders playing the recorder.

Au clair de la lune,
mon ami pierrot,
prète moi ta plume,
pour écrire un mot.

Ma chandelle est morte,
je n’ai plus de feu….

Thx from a french reader.

“Au Clair de la Lune” featured heavily in the
dark movie “The Bad Seed” especially when the
child Rhoda(played by Patty McCormack)played
this song on her piano after murdering someone
and when her mother asked her about someone dying, she would ignore her and speed up her
playing…very eerie!
