Traditional Irish Christmas Song: "The Wexford Carol"

Monday December 8, 2008
This is the time of year when my family likes to get together and huddle around the piano next to the cracking fireplace and sing Christmas carols every night. We sip hot mulled cider, wear cozy sweaters with little snowmen on the front, and smile as our voices blend in perfect harmony.

Wait, no, that's not us. We tell dirty jokes and argue about politics, and I always complain that it's never warm enough and my mother always yells at me for not being good enough at conserving energy, and the vegetarians always complain about the ham, and the dog knocks over the Christmas tree at least twice... yes, that's us. But we do make a concerted effort to huddle around the old out-of-tune piano and hack our way through a few carols at least once a year. No one plays the piano very well, but we're luckily all pretty good singers, so it all works out. One of our favorites is The Wexford Carol, which, I recently discovered, isn't as well-known as some of the others, especially for folks who may not be of Irish descent. But if you don't know it, you should, because it's a beautiful one. Seriously, next time you're considering embarking on the travesty that is The Little Drummer Boy, try The Wexford Carol instead. It's way, way, way better.
