Zydeco Princess Rosie Ledet Under Investigation Over Death of Baby
Disturbing news from zydeco country: Rosie Ledet, the reigning queen of zydeco, is under investigation for the death of a newborn baby. Allegedly, 37-year-old Ledet miscarried the baby, who was nearly full-term, and proceeded to hide the body in a shed behind her bandmate's house on July 1. The band then went on tour the next day to perform in Sioux City, Iowa. When they returned three days later, Ledet notified her bandmate about the infant's body, and he called police. Ledet has not been arrested, only questioned, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate.
Update, 9/30/09: Rosie Ledet will not be charged in death of baby.

I’m a mother, a psychologist, a writer, and a musician who loves (and performs) Cajun and Creole music. This widely-circulated story makes me terribly sad. The truth probably won’t be known for some weeks. I hope people will refrain from rushing to judgment until then. Also, let’s remember that a late-term stillbirth can create an enormous number of postpartum issues. Also, a final observation: I don’t think “starlet” is the best description of a 37- year-old woman who is a widely recognized musician in one of our country’s rich musical traditions. Thank you for allowing me to comment.
You’re right about starlet – fixed it!
As for the situation, it’s sad any which way you slice it… clearly, there’s a traumatic situation which occurred, but this is the evidence that has been presented thus far. No judgment is being passed – it’s just the facts here, as they’ve been presented by the Allen Parish Police.
Thanks so much for your quick and very open response to this!
“Princess” works fine–that’s how she is often billed, in fact.
Yes, I do think you presented the facts as reported. My concern is how others might respond to what is certainly a grim and pretty sensational story But if there is, as we both seem to think, some element of trauma involved in what was certainly troubling (and bizarre) behavior, then it is easier to feel compassion for Rosie Ledet. I hope that turns out to be the case.
Thanks again for “listening.”

she;s actually ‘the zydeco sweetheart’
not sure who ‘the princess’ is

i watched Rosie play, here in sioux city, july 3 at he convention center. ithought it odd at the time how she never looked at the audience, much less acknowleged us like she was in her own little world. next day at saturday in the park, july 4, the same thing. appears she did have something on her mind besides the music.
Let’s stop making excuses. I love her music too, but if the baby was still born at birth, you call 911, not have it, wrap it up, and go put it in a shak, and then go perform. Sounds to me like premeditated murder. I sick and tired of postpartum made me do this and that. I don’t care who you are wrong is wrong. Again I say call 911, not throw it away. And you are right, innocent until proven innocent, but again I say CALL 911!!!!!
What rule says that 911 must be called? Is there any law for this situation? Why not call a funeral home? My neighbor has a family cemetery behind his house. The mother should decide what to do with the tragic baby. That is what Ms Ledet did. It was not wrong.
Blair you have the right answer. I am a nurse, a mother and also an accordion player. As being pregnant at the moment myself and also knowing Rosie this has me down. I can’t imagine how she feels, she needs all the support she can get at a time like this.
Mental illness, maybe drugs and/or voodoo, no money/no health insurance, no prenatal care, panic over stillborn or dying newborn, master-puppet relationship with baby daddy, potential disruption of music career = loss of income.
When a death occurs there must be an attending MD to confirm and issure a death certificate. The baby may not have been dead when it was placed in the shed. Who knows ? Who is to say it could not have been saved.
any one who knows rosie knows better!!!!!
any one who knows rosie knows better!!!!!!!
I thought Rosie was married to Morris Ledet. So what’s up with that? What’s his role in all of this? The news reports don’t even mention him at all. Was Rosie home alone when she had the baby? Did anybody even know she was pregnant? Why did that guy in Rosie’s band put the baby in HIS shed?? This is just getting too bizarre and sad. I feel sorry for everyone involved. May that poor baby rest in peace.
rosie and morris divorced yrs ago. no one not even rosie knew she was pregnant . the guy in the band is rosies boyfriend. the shed was at the house they shared.
Man, people really screw up their lives….
Broken heart you are right Rosie has this cheerful bubbly personality and I hate that she is going through this.
ROSIE LEDET PULLS OUT OF LOWELL FOLK FESTIVAL
The Lowell Sun
Updated: 07/21/2009 05:41:43 PM EDT
LOWELL — With three days to go to the Lowell Folk Festival, Zydeco artist Rosie Ledet canceled her performance in Lowell. This is the second year in a row the accordion-wielding singer from Louisiana has pulled out of the free festival.
“She is in the middle of a personal crisis … That this can happen to the same festival, by the same artist two years in a row is absolutely unbelievable,” said Madeleine Remez, senior program manager for the National Council for Traditional Arts in an e-mail. Without skipping a beat, DL Menard has been tapped to replace the headliner. The “Cajun Hank Williams” is expected to appear with Terry Huval and The Jambalaya Cajun Band.
last time she was in ny morris was not there, rosie said her 21 year old daughter was PG and had complications
She also said she had headaches and what could have been a mild stroke, the meds she looked made her look puffy but not like she was PG.
rosie did a show back in june cajun zydeco fest and all she talked about is her new grandbaby at the jazz fest she told the crowed how happy she was the baby would be there soon im no doc but if rosie was pg it must have been very eary stages the news said fullterm baby
The timing would be right June 13th festival …then this on July 1st…
Anybody know if her daughter actually gave birth?
I have been friends with Miss Rosie for many years . I know her daughter was expecting . We are very close and she would have told me if she was preg . She bragged and bragged about how beautiful the nursery was and how she couldnt wait for the baby. Hell she told it to thousands at the jazz fest !
Yes her daughter has had her baby,Mike
We do all love Rosie’s music. But I’m wondering about some of the messages on here. If a woman is 8-9 months pregnant, why wouldn’t you know? The news reported that “SHE” said , she had the baby at her house and took it to his house. In a message from a friend on here, it reads;” it was a house they shared.” And another question, ” if a person came to your vehicle with a blanket in this heat, wouldn’t you ask why?” I would, unless I already knew. And I wouldn’t care if it were my brother or anyone else, I would want to know, what are you going in my shed for. Okay the last thing is: with all the symptoms of postpartum depression, Postpartum psychosis & Postpartum blues, the one thing they have in common is the Extreme confusion and “disorganized” thinking, increasing your risk of harming yourself, your baby, or another person.
I don’t see where this was disorganized. It took organization to take the time to wrap the baby, move it from a location so it couldn’t be found, not leave it in the other house; but take it to a area of little or no traffic. I’m watching the MJ case where a patient was paying His doctor to give him medicine and now the doctor is going to be basically hung for it. Not trying to see if the medications between all the different doctors could have been a bad mix. And here is a small town, where a child is dead, and it seems like everyone is saying it’s okay. It’s not okay. When Andrea Yates killed hers, it wasn’t okay…it’s never okay. and “NO,” I am NOT saying she killed her baby. I am saying, that it was handled wrong. That’s for the person who believes it’s okay to bury your child in your backyard. It’s not a dog. It’s a little person who should be handle with some dignity, dead or alive.
And if you’re wondering, I am a female. I’ve had two miscarriages. It tore me up both times. But I did what I knew to do. When to the doctor and let them do what they had to do. I didn’t feel like hanging out. This may seem harsh, but reality sometimes is. I hear the conversations and I read the messages. It seems to me that everyone is tip toeing around what they believe. It’s on every website, from myspace to facebook to where ever. From what I hear from the people in the area that it’s believed that it won’t get investigated. They’re going to keep it quiet, so people will stop talking and hopefully forget about it. For whatever reasons. Now, I didn’t say she killed her baby. Let’s make sure we keep that clear. But there are questions that someone with a law degree would ponder.
to megan; Is there a follow up report on the autoposy? Is it being investigated? Is She getting mental help?

Bridget’s got it right…Nothing is more important than a human life. You don’t assume it’s dead–
You bloody well call 911…
Guess I’m hardnosed…You see, I’m a Korean War combat veteran and a retired street cop.
ALL,I WISH IS THE BEST FOR YOU.YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS.
So it’s been almost 3 months now. Why is there no other info? Please tell that this is not getting swept under the rug.
