Essential Tango Songs — A Playlist

By August 26, 2011

Follow me on:

My bucket list is not long and it is not full of thrills. I'm pretty comfortable with the fact that I've never jumped out of an airplane, I see no real need to hoist my whiny self up the side of any major mountains, and I don't particularly want to go tornado chasing. I do, however, want to learn how to tango. I've managed to pick up a whole bunch of other partner dances by osmosis, simply through listening to the music and attending dances and watching what other people do, but the tango is a fair bit more convoluted than my old standby, the Texas Two-Step. But I love the tango, and feel a real pull toward it. The combination of traditional musics of South America and Spain with African dance beats and Western European composition, all punctuated by clicking heels and undeniably sexy high-drama moves? Me gusta.

Yep, I'll be requiring training, and it'll be rough, as I'm a notoriously bad student, but one of these days, I will get into the studio and at least learn the basics. For now, I'll just enjoy listening, pairing my tango music with steaks and chimichurri and a whizbanger of a Malbec, leaving the dancing to professionals. If you'd like to do the same at your house, get your tango collection started right with these 10 Essential Tango Songs, hand-picked by About.com's guide to Latin Music, Carlos Quintana.

For the sheer thrill of it try Astor Piazzola’s 3CD set “The Late Masterpieces” – The Complete Work on American Clave.
