The BBC is reporting that legendary Classical Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar has passed away at the age of 92. Shankar had reportedly been admitted to a hospital in San Diego last week for breathing difficulties.
Shankar is unquestionably the best-known name in classical Indian music worldwide, and was largely responsible for its popularity in the United States, particularly due to his friendships and musical collaborations with popular Western musicians like George Harrison of The Beatles. Shankar was the father of the late Shubho Shankar, as well as renowned sitarist Anoushka Shankar (who is currently nominated for a world music Grammy, as is the elder Shankar) and jazz-folk musician Norah Jones. We send our deepest condolences to his family and enormous network of friends.
