Michel Martelly Quick Bio:
Michel Joseph Martelly, also known by his stage names "Sweet Micky" and "Tete Kale," was born on February 12, 1961 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As a child, he reportedly taught himself to play piano. He spent two years in the United States in the mid-1980s, one with his first wife in Colorado, and the second with his second (and current) wife, Sophia, in Miami.
Sweet Micky's Music Career:
In 1987, Michel Martelly began playing keyboards in some local Port-au-Prince bands, and soon began branching out on his own and developing a modern, heavily electronic style of Compas music. His stage persona, Sweet Micky, was a bawdy burlesque-style skirt-wearing jokester who became one of Haiti's most popular performers.
Michel Martelly's Political Career:
After the horrific 2010 Earthquake in Haiti, Martelly decided to run for president. He ran his campaign on a populist, governmental outsider platform (wearing proper businessman dress clothes, of course), and took over 2/3 of the popular vote in a runoff election in late March of 2011. As of early April, 2011, it seems as though Martelly will be the new Haitian president.
