Sugar Minott - Basic Biography:

Sugar Minott was born Lincoln Barrington Minott (pronounced my-not) on May 25, 1956 in Jamaica. He died on July 10, 2010 in Kingston, Jamaica. In his 40-plus years of recording, he released dozens of albums and hundreds of singles, mostly in the dancehall genre. He also mentored underprivileged younger musicians and, with his organization Youth Promotion, helped them develop their music and their careers.

Sugar Minott's Contribution to Jamaican Music:

Minott began his career in a roots reggae vocal group called The African Brothers in the late 1960s. In the mid-1970s, he began working with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd at his Studio One label, and began experimenting with a new style of recording over previously-recorded songs... an important component of dancehall music. Though dancehall is known for violent and slack lyrics, Minott was always a positive message-bearer, bridging the gap between roots reggae and dancehall. He ultimately had more commercial success in the UK than he did in Jamaica, but his trademark sound and dancehall innovations were hugely influential to Jamaican music history.
