DJARara is the oldest continuously-existing Haitian rara group in the United States. Based in Brooklyn, DJARara keeps alive the island rara tradition: a music and performance style that is intertwined with vodou and Haitian Carnival celebrations and involves drumming, dancing, chanting, and other forms of performance, with a decidedly spiritual aspect. Part of the rara tradition involves found-object instrumentation, particularly horns made out of recycled metal. Several of these were played during DJARara's set, but they were also not shy about using a modern variant on the same style of instrument: the raucous vuvuzela!
