Boukman Eksperyans was founded by Lolo Beaubrun and his wife, Manze, and has always been a politically outspoken group, so much so that they've lived away from Haiti in political exile at least twice. The Beaubruns are practitioners of vodou, and bring vodou musical traditions to their groups sound, but they're also fans of all sorts of international music, from Jimi Hendrix (whose band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, inspired the "Eksperyans" part of Boukman Eksperyans) to Bob Marley, whose ability to translate a political message into music was a source of inspiration for Mr. Beaubrun.
