Riddim

By Megan Romer, About.com

Definition: In reggae, ska and dancehall music, a riddim is an instrumental version of a song, generally featuring heavy drum and bass lines, sometimes with no melodic instruments. In the context of other genres of music, such as hip-hop, a riddim would be simply called a "beat." Sometimes the same riddims are used for multiple songs, and riddims are generally played while dancehall deejays toast.
