Friday October 19, 2007
Lucky Dube, a pioneer of South African reggae was killed on Thursday, October 18 in Rosettenville, South Africa, a suburb of Johannesburg. He was dropping his teenage son off, and it appeared that three men attempted to hijack his car. They shot him, and he attempted to drive away but crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His sixteen year old daughter also witnessed the event.

Lucky Dube was one of the first African artists to be world-renowned as a reggae vocalist and songwriter. He had an international hit in 2003 with "Number in the Book", a song about AIDS. With a career beginning at age 18, Lucky Dube recorded over 20 records and toured internationally.

He was 43 when he died. According to his website, luckydubemusic.com, he is survived by his wife Zanele and their seven children (including 3 month old baby Melokuhle).

Truly, one of reggae music’s greatest performers.

My heart goes out to his family, friends, and his millions of fans around the world.
