Indian Music Social Networking Site Hits the Scene
Tuesday September 23, 2008
A new favorite is Uhooroo.com, a social networking site for Indian music. All sorts of genres are represented, from Classical Indian to Bollywood/Filmi, with a large representation from the bhangra community and even a couple of chutney artists thrown in for good measure. It's definitely a great place to browse for a couple of hours, and I'm sure it will only continue to improve as the word spreads.
What is your favorite social networking site for discovering world music? Leave a comment and let us know!

Uhooroo is good but very limited I feel. My favorite would be Muziboo.com
They do not limit you to any particular genre/language so one can get to browse a big collection of indie music and also read some interesting comments on the music.
But is myspace really so bad ?
First off, Thank You Megan for reviewing us. You have really managed to capture the reason Uhooroo.com might appeal to people who are even tangentially interested in Indian music.
Ramesh, we do respect your choice. However, what Megan’s pointing out is the noise levels on Myspace for Indian musicians, a sentiment shared by several of our users. Indian music is one of the world’s richest musical traditions, and we don’t believe focusing on that niche is “limiting”; the India-focus and “use of Indian music genres” on Uhooroo are by design. The world already has way too many successful music services, and what we are set out to do is add value by providing focus and cultural identity to our users who feel lost on those sites.

I heard of a new social networking site for Indian students by the name of Social Synapse. www.socialsynapse.com . They are currently accepting beta testers.
