Music at Cajun Mardi Gras Celebrations

Musicians Kevin Wimmer, Cedric Watson, and Wilson Savoy Play on the Street at Cajun Mardi Gras

(c) Megan Romer, 2009
Music is an integral part of traditional Cajun Mardi Gras Celebrations, and the Cajun lifestyle in general. Musicians offer a live soundtrack for the Mardi Gras courir, a traditional begging ritual (related to the ancient begging traditions of trick-or-treating on Halloween and wassailing) which is combined with a touch of Bacchanalia to create a unique and festive day unlike any other Mardi Gras or Carnaval tradition anywhere else in the world.

In this picture, musicians Cedric Watson, Wilson Savoy (of the Pine Leaf Boys, and Kevin Wimmer (of the Red Stick Ramblers share a tune while some friends look on.
