When Jamaican artists began recording ska music in the early 1960s, they started a wave of musical innovation that would lead Jamaican music to become influential on just about every form of modern music (pop, hip-hop, rock) that we know of today. That is to say that in the early 1960s, Jamaican ska artists changed the music world. Most ska artists in this era recorded singles, but when the ska-punk revival in the 1990s brought renewed interest to traditional ska, thousands of these singles have been re-released into compilation CD form.
