From the article: What is World Music?
The phrase "world music" is, to be sure, a nebulous one. Even those of us who work in the world music industry can't always come up with an absolute definition of what world music is. Whether or not we like it, though, it's become embedded in the consciousness at this point. So what does it mean to you? How would you define "world music?" What's Your Definition?

My definition

Just like many poets.musicians express their emotions through song.writing down their thought and putting it into lyrics.it really is a gift.

Good Question

This is definitely THE question. What defines world music to me -- that is, music that reflects the cultural sensibilities of cultures other than my own -- is obviously not universal. African music is world music -- to me. To Africans, it's just music. Plus we also must consider the fusions of different music (latin-celtic, latin-afro, etc.). I am quite interested in what others have to say on the matter.

Tributaries

I describe the music I love as the tributaries to the mainstream of American music, but on reflection and in response to your question I would expand that to the tributaries to mainstream music the world over, and then it would be world music. Actually, the first definition probably works--American music comes from all over the world.
